Learchild deserted medieval village (Edlingham)
'NU 095105' Deserted medieval village at Learchild. (Nothing visible on available aerial photographs (RAF 1946)). (1)
The indicated area is centred on the single farmstead of High Learchild. This is surrounded by pasture and arable fields which betray no visible indications of depopulation. (2)
NU 100110 Learchild deserted medieval village. Member of the barony of Beanley. Has an obscure late medieval history. Ten men from the place attended the 1538 Muster. 1649 Thomas Clavering compounded his demesne for Learchild and in 1719 Robert Clavering held the East Side of Learchild suggesting a physical division of the town lands. Dixon noted 'many grass grown foundation mounds' at Low Learchild. 12th-13th century pottery has been recovered from the spoil of drains excavated at NU 09921075 near Low Learchild by T H Rowland.
