Sewingshields Wall (Hadrian's Wall) (Simonburn; Haydon)
During 1978 and 1979 a total of 245m of the Wall was excavated which, joined with lengths already uncovered, made 320m (1b).
Consolidated Wall; Narrow Wall 2.3m wide, Broad Wall foundations up to 3m wide, the height is variable, up to 1.5m. (1a)
Sewingshields Wall is a section of Hadrian's Wall occupying the crest and slopes along Sewingshields Crags, Simonburn. It survives intermittently as upstanding masonry remains. West of Milecastle 35 the Wall survives as an irregular turf-covered mound, averaging 2.5 metres wide and 0.6 metres high. Either side of Milecastle the remains have been consolidated and consist of Narrow Wall, 2.3 metres wide, on a broad wall foundation, 3 metres wide. It survives to a maximum height of 1.5 metres. Milecastle 35, located on the east facing slope of Sewingshields Crags, measures 18.3 metres north-south by 15.2 metres east-west. The walls are up to 3.2 metres in width and the ground plan includes several phases of building. Along the crest of the crags the upstanding stone remains are divided by sections of the Wall, which survive as buried features 2.5 metres wide and 1 metre high. Where the wall changes direction to a north-south alignment it survives as a buried feature beneath a field wall that has been partly constructed from reused Roman masonry. For most of the section there is no outer ditch, since the Wall occupies the crest of the steep outcropping bedrock of Sewingshields Crags and there would have been no need for such a feature. (1c)
A length of Wall with milecastle remains, impressively sited along the Whin Sill, commanding fine views of many prehistoric and later earthworks to the north. (1e-f)
The precise line of the Wall in the vicinity of Sewingshiels Farm was resolved by excavation of 5 small trenches in 1999 and 2002. The Wall (2.5m wide, with no evidence of Broad Wall foundation), was found several metres to the south of the line projected on the Ordnance Survey. (1g-i)
Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (1j)
General association with HER 7827 (Milecastle 35), HER 7847 (field terraces), HER 32001 (medieval occupation), HER 32007 (branch road), HER 32024 (Hadrian's Wall), HER 32025 (Hadrian's Wall). (1)
