Bronze Age Cist (Cheviotside)

'In 1936, a cist was opened up from below a slight mound in the north-east corner of Jubilee Wood. It contained a female skull and the thigh bone and a tooth of a child. There was also a Food Vessel which contained what I believe were food fragments, which were sent away for analysis. The cist is still in situ, and the Food Vessel is now at Roddam Hall'. (1)

NU 0322 1993. The cairn, situated on the summit of a knoll is badly mutilated by excavations. It has a maximum height of 1.1m and is 9m in diameter. The cist consists of four stone slabs forming interior measurements of 1.1m by 0.9m with a large triangular cover stone in position. The skull and bone found, as well as the food vessel are at Roddam Hall. The latter is approximately 5ins high, 5ins in diameter at the top and 3ins at the bottom - the upper part having a chevron design of twisted thong impressions, and the lower part having diagonal incised markings. (2)

Condition of cist unchanged; surveyed at 1:2500. The cairn is so badly mutilated by excavation and stone dumping that its original form is indistinguishable. (3)
