Trackway, Castle Hill (Alnham)

Field survey by English Heritage in 2000 recorded remains of a track way (Track 6) on the north face of Castle Hill. It was the main route north from Castlehill Cottage to Ewartly Shank before the present road was built in 1959. The route is now a public footpath. (1)

(NT 9824 1101 - NT 9792 1109 - NT 9783 1117 - NT 9788 1123) Post-medieval track

Between May and June 2000, English Heritage carried out a detailed field investigation of the Iron Age hillfort on Castle Hill (NT 91 SE 9), together with an area of 16.1ha around it, following a request from the Northumberland National Park (Event record 1300646).

The survey recorded a trackway of post medieval origin, in part surviving as an earthwork but also known from documentary sources, crossing Castle Hill from east to west. Part of the route survived in use until 1959 as the main road to Ewartly Shank and is now a public footpath.

For further information, see the Level 3 report on the field investigation, available through the NMR, which includes a full textual description and interpretation of the remains, copies of plans surveyed at various scales, selected photographs and interpretative drawings. (2a)
