Gallows (Thropton)
[Name: NU 03670165] Gallowfield Brae. (1)
The gallows of Robert fitz Roger, the first Lord of Rothbury (1205) stood on a hill close to Westhills Camp. The slopes of the hill were still called The Gallowfield Braes. This spot 500 feet above sea level was admirably adapted for such a purpose. (2)
Area NU 037019. Westhills earthwork is situated upon the flat top of a spur, the south-western slopes of which fall steeply for some 400m distance to the flat pastures along the north bank of the River Coquet.
There is no local knowledge of the site of the gallows, but the most probable position is the vicinity of Westhills farmhouse, which stands at 500 feet above sea level on the end of the spur. (3)
