Cairn north-east of Westhills Farm (Rothbury)
[NU 03850225] On an eminence about 200 yards slightly east of north from the centre of the camp: four rocks containing in all about 30 plain single cups, mostly deep and symmetrical, no rings or ducts; also two oval cups and one double cup. Some of these have sides almost vertical, as against the usual sloping type.
On top of the little hill are remains of a mound, probably a burial site. Unpublished: site until recently covered by dense growth. (1)
Upon the top and west slope of a small rocky hill are some cup marked rocks.
'A' NU 03840227. 28m south of the north corner of the field, a rock exposure with eight cups 0.07m in diameter with steep cut sides.
'B' NU 03830225. 12m south-west of 'A', among gorse bushes, a small rock with a double cup, three oval cups and four round cups, all small.
'C' NU 03880224. 19m west-north-west of the east corner of the field, a small rock with two midget cups.
The top of the hill is pitted with small surface stone quarries, with associated scatters of loose stone. There is no evidence of there having been a burial site upon the hill. The fourth rock (authority 1 refers) was not located. (2)
The field containing these rocks has been ploughed for afforestation, and now has a thick cover of young fir, brambles and bracken. The markings could not be relocated using F1's measurements, but it is not certain that they have not been moved or destroyed. A turf-covered cairn some 17m diameter and 1.5m high at NU 03930209 is undoubtedly the one intended by Hope-Dodds, surveyed at 1:2500. (3)
Round cairn. (4)
Scheduled. (5)
NU 0393 0209. Cairn 210m NE of Westhills Farm. Scheduled RSM No 20879. A cairn of Bronze Age date situated on a small hill. It measures 17m in diameter and survivies to a height of 1.3m. The cairn is constructed of earth and stones, and much stonework is visible on the surface. On the top of the cairn there is a hollow 3m across with a tree stump growing in it. The hollow is the result of an unrecorded late 19th century excavation. (6a)
