Barrowburn mill (Alwinton)

Remains of a Medieval fulling mill were identified by Coquetdale Community Archaeology group in 2010. The mill has been suspected for some time: an entry in the the Newminster Chartulary of 1226 mentions a millpond, and the 19th century, writer David Dippie Dixon claimed the foundations of ancient building were visible when the water was low and clear. Remains were found at two sites about 60m apart at Windyhaugh on the River Coquet.
