Building and a small pen, Chew Green (Alwinton)

Two buildings to the west of Dere Street, remains of possible turf buildings (shielings?). Measure 6m x 4m and 11m x 5m, both have only one room. (1)

NT 7873 0881. Earthworks of a building and adjoining pen. (2)

Part of national monument number 28538, scheduling revised on 24th September 1997. The footings of a rectangular structure are situated upon the earthwork remains of Dere Street immediately south of the point where it crosses the Chew Sike. (3)

This site has been surveyed in connection with RCHME's survey and publication of Roman Camps in England. The following descriptive account is taken from the published text.
NT 78730881. The footings of two small structures, apparently a building and a small pen, survive on top of the agger of Dere Street, just to the S of the point where the road crossed the Chew Sike and immediately NE of the NW part of camp III. Later road-users had to cross the burn about 30 m downstream. Full information is included in the NMR Archive. (4)
