St Edward's Hospital (Berwick upon Tweed)
St Edward's 'the hospital of the Bridge of Berwick' was founded in 1234. 'Soon after its foundation it came into the possession of the Trinitarians. Later references show that the designation 'Maison Dieu' was applied to the Trinitarians' hospital. It appears that the Maison Dieu and St Edward's hospital were originally separate foundations, the one under secular supervision, the other placed under regulars. Was the latter also known as 'Maison Dieu' or did the Trinitarians' hospital take over that designation after the destruction of the secular institution?' (1)
Domus Pontis (St Edward's Hospital). Said to have been founded by William the Lion (1165-1214). In 1234 Church of St Kettin given to the hospital; 1240-8 Trinitarians established in Berwick; 1249-86 hospital referred to as Hospital of Trinitarians; 1447 Trinitarians described as non-conventual house, confirming view that they were only associated with running of hospital. Friars may have left by 1456, but must have left and closed hospital by 1488 when revenues of house granted to Trinitarian house at Peebles. (2)
