Berwick Blackfriars (Berwick upon Tweed)
The Dominican Friary at Berwick was founded in 1230 by Alexander II. In 1291 the Dominican Chapel, close by the Castle was the scene of a meeting in which Edward I and the magnates of both kingdoms debated the claims of the rivals to the throne of Scotland. The last mention of the house is in 1343. (1)
Site of Domincan Friary 1230-85. Founded by Alexander II. In 1285 the Dominicans moved to another site in the town centre, buying the house of the former Friars of Penitence. In 1291/2 the chapel of the Dominicans by the castle was described as 'deserta'. Abandonment of the site confirmed by a reference in 1313 to 'the old place formerly of the Friars Preachers'. (2)
