Cocklaw Hills (Berwick upon Tweed)

In February 1898 a cist was ploughed up in a field called 'Cocklaw Hill' on the farm of High Cocklaw. Earlier two other cists had been found in the same field, one of which contained pieces of charred bone, and the fragments of an urn. Two querns, (one of which is now in the Berwick Museum), as well as several celts have also been found earlier in the same field. (1)

A fourth cist, found in 1900, contained an urn a large number of jet beads and two flint beads. (2)

Mr A Brown, of Middle Ord Farm, who was present at the discovery in 1898 indicated the approximate find spot at NT 95105449. There are three querns and several stone axes in Berwick Museum, but no accession records are available. (3)

No further information. (4)

The short cist cemetery at Cocklaw Hill is detailed in an article by Callandar. Material from the cists is recorded in the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland, toegether with a jet spacer plate and fusisfrom bead found in a cist during the 1920s. These finds include a plano-convex knife that is recorded as coming from one of the cists. A separate flint dagger has been also recovered from this general area, though this lacks any formal association with the cist cemetery proper. (5)(6)
