The remains of an Iron Age hillfort show up as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Archaeologists excavated part of the site between 1979 and 1983 and found it had been defended by two concentric lines of palisades encircling the hill top. Later, these were replaced by several rampart phases. Immediately inside the enclosure were traces of ring groove round houses that had been replaced later with three superimposed round houses, the latest possibly being Roman in date. The entrance to the hillfort appears to have been destroyed by a 19th century quarry. The oldest structure on the site seems to have been a ring groove for a timber house that was found outside the hillfort. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.
