Bell pits (Shoreswood)

Aerial photograph shows possible remains of bell pits. (1)

A number of post Medieval coal workings/bell pits and two linear coal workings, centred at NT 9456 4595, are visible as cropmarks on air photographs. They follow the Wester coal measures and the Cooper Eye coal measures (Ordnance Survey - Geological Survey of England and Wales - map sheet 1). The linear features may represent natural outcroppings of coal seams, or they may identify where a seam has been extracted. (2a-c)
