Pit alignments and other features south of Thirlings (Ewart)
Cropmarks of a series of pit alignments were recorded on air photographs in the Ewart area. (For details see plan). In 1977 an area 'a' (on plan), averaging 6.3m x 17.5m was excavated providing six complete pit plans. The excavation of the pits provided evidence that they once held substantial posts. A quantity of pottery sherds, falling broadly within the Clacton sub-style of Grooved Ware tradition, were found amongst the fill of the pits. (1)

Aerial photographs show discontinuous pit alignment and linear features. (3)
Centred at NT 956 318 are three pit alignments:
(a) Centred at NT 9565 3167, a pit alignment can be traced for 230m from NT 9553 3169 to 9576 3165.
(b) Centred at NT 9570 3183, a pit alignment can be traced for c 820m (with gaps) from 9540 3185 to 9611 3169.
(c) Centred at NT 9543 3218, a pit alignment can be traced for c. 360m from NT 9538 3198 to 9549 ????. (4)
Same as NRHE UID 1197459 Ewart 2 Pit alignment A pit alignment at Ewart, visible as a cropmark and at least some 300 metres in extent. It lies to the south of the Ewart 1 pit alignment (NT 93 SE 27), which was associated with Grooved Ware, and is roughly parallel to it (Miket lists it as Ewart 2). The pit sizes and spacing is similar to Ewart 1. The relationship between the two is obscured by woodland. (5a)
A pit alignment of likely Iron Age-Roman date was first recorded from EH Reconnaissance aerial photographs taken on 12th July 2013. The feature, located at NT 9541 3217, takes a fairly sinuous route over a distance of approximately 70 metres. The feature appears as a single line of pits along a northeast-southwest alignment with potential surface workings or other pitting along the side. The area is heavily masked by geological features. (5b)
A pit alignment of Iron Age/Roman date is visible as a cropmark and first recorded from EH Reconnaissance aerial photography taken on 12th July 2013. The feature, located at NT 9571 3183 is on an east west alignment and there are other larger pit features irregularly arranged on either side of the linear feature. There is another group of smaller pit like features to the southwest (HER 19720). (5c)
