Galewood Anglo-Saxon burials (Ewart)
NT 95193238. A burial, considered to be Saxon was found, c.1852, while digging foundations in the farmyard at Galewood. It consisted of the remains of a body furnished with two bronze rings, probably fibulae; an earthenware vessel and several feet away, two iron spearheads. (1)
The grave-goods suggest that there were probably two burials. (2)
The farmer at Galewood has no knowledge of the finds, and their present whereabouts are unknown. (3)
A geophysical survey and archaeological evaluation were carried out in September 1996 ahead of planning permission for a bungalow at c.NT 95243244, in a former garden of Galewood House. The geophysical survey detected no features of any age, all anomalies apparently associated with recent history or current use of the site. Seven test pits were excavated across the site and revealed no remains of any archaeological significance. (4)
