Military camp near Coupland (Ewart)
The remains of a military camp, probably dating from after World War II, lie in woodland east of Coupland. There are a number of buildings and earthwork revetments. The buildings are mostly ruinous, but some still stand to their full height, although their roofs have collapsed. The camp is visible on aerial photographs from 1951. (1)(2)(3)(4)
The site still has several World War 2 structures remaining. These include a number of blast shelters, a squash court, water tower, a standby set house and a gas decontamination (type M) bunker. The latter is particularly rare with only 45 of these surviving across the country and this appears to be one of the earlier completely sealed types with neither windows or doors apart from an entrance and exit, though is in a ruined condition (perhaps intentionally damaged). The water tower is also in a damaged condition with a hole smashed through into the wall of what might have been the water tank chamber. The whole site is heavily overgrown with post-war trees. (5)
RAF Milfield communal site with 19 blast shelters recorded as extant or known from 1965 Ordnance Survey. (6)(7)(8)
