Site of Farnham Tileworks (Hepple)

This is the site of a tileworks. There were many such small tileworks throughout Northumberland in the later half of the 19th century. This was a late site working from 1879 to 1906, also as a sawmill. The buildings of the site are shown by the second edition of the Ordnance Survey who mapped it in the 1890s. However, the kiln or kilns, drying sheds and machinery were not specified. More significantly the pit from which the clay was extracted is not shown. The works would have produced many miles of drainage pipes for the drainage of the clayey soils.
