Deserted medieval village west of Quickening Cote (Alwinton)
This site is a deserted medieval settlement sited on south-east sloping ground overlooking Ridlees Burn. The remains of at least seven rectangular farmhouses can be seen. They survive as grass-covered banks of earth and stone up to 3m wide. The buildings are all 5m wide but vary from between 10m and 20m long. They are sited on both sides of a small stream. They are nearly all aligned west-east. Documentary evidence supports the tradition that this site was the medieval village of Aldensheles, which probably survived until the 17th century. This site is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.
