Possible fort (Ford)

Double-ditched semi-circular enclosure, possibly a promontory fort. Visible on aerial photographs. (1)

Iron Age bivallate promontory fort is situated on the edge of a bluff overlooking the river Till. The defences consist of two curving lengths of ditch spaced up to 15m apart. There appears to be an entrance in the E-facing side of the enclosure.

A cliff-top fort, surviving as two rather widely spaced concentric arcs of cropmark ditches located on a bluff overlooking the River Till at Etal. Although authority 1 describes earthworks, none can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1980. These photos do not appear to show the full extent of the ditches as at neither end can they be seen to extend as far as the break of slope which marks the edge of the bluff. (2)

NT 926396. New Etal - earthwork, cropmark. (3a)

This site has been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the Milfield Geoarchaeology Project. (see archive object MD000293) (3)
