Milfield North pit alignment (Milfield)

(NT 93353507) A double pit alignment at Milfield North was seen on air photographs running east-west and terminating at a spot roughly 180m north of the henge (NT 93 SE 13). In 1978 the easternmost pair of pits were excavated. They were found to be bowl-shaped and contained substantial posts. Charcoal from the upper fill of one of the pits produced radio carbon dates of 1790+/-50 bc, 1820+/-50 bc and 1655+/- 80 bc. Sherds of a sub-style of Grooved ware were also found in the upper fill of this pit. (1)

The pits in the alignment are irregularly spaced but always in pairs an equal distance apart. (2)

Approximately 170m north of the Milfield North henge (SMR 2010) a double row of pits, c.90m long, extends from NT 9330 3595 to NT 9339 3605. These pits are not shown on Rog Palmer's plot, although they are visible on air photographs. (3)

General association with HER 2010. (4)
