Henge west of Second Linthaugh (Ford)

Cropmark coincides with the perimeter of a slight, waterlogged depression, probably a filled in marlpit. (2)
NT 93003660: This cropmark site has been re-classified as a class 1 henge, of 38m external diameter, with a relatively narrow ditch, based on recent air photographs. (3)

An oval enclosure with dimensions of c. 45m SW-NE by 35m NW-SE and an internal area of c 0.1ha is defined by a single ditch. It occupies level ground on the floor of the Till valley. A well marked entrance faces to the NE. None of the available air photographs shows any sign of occupation. In the past it has been suggested that this site represents a henge but this interpretation has not received support and on balance it seems more likely to be a settlement of the late pre-Roman Iron Age or the Roman period. Aerial photographs tend to show this as an oval, rather than a circular site. It measures c.45m south-west to north-east by c.35m north-west to south-east and has an internal area of c.0.1ha. There is a single entrance clearly visible in the north-eastern part of the ditch. (1, 3a, 4b, 6c-r)
This site could be a settlement enclosure. (6s)
