North Seaton Colliery (Ashington)

Series of buildings generally titled as North Seaton Colliery in early mapping of the area (1); includes a specifically named engine house, and four unstated pit terraces.

North Seaton Colliery and its associated settlement are visible as structure on historical air photos.
The 1866 Ordnance Survey map names North Seaton Colliery and shows an Engine House, a reservoir and a powder house. It also shows two terraced rows running near north to south between the colliery and North Seaton Colliery. The two terraces are labelled as Fourth Single Row and Saw Mill Road on the 1922 edition of the Ordnance Survey 25inch map.
By the time of the 1898 edition the worker's accommodation had expanded westward and the colliery complex had expanded and was linked to Newbiggin Branch railway via a mineral railway. In the later 1940 the air photos show that further terraces had been added to the east but the basic footprint of the colliery had not expanded. In 1971 demolition of the terraces and the colliery was underway but the site remained under rubble and debris until at least 1975. The site has now been developed but some below ground remains may survive in some parts. (2) (3) (4) (5) (6)
