Medieval shieling and enclosure south-west of Langlee (Cheviotside)

(NT 96272305) Enclosure? (1)

An irregular enclosure situated on the level crest of a ridge between two streams. It is contained by a single bank of earth and stones, maximum height 0.7m. In the enclosed area are traces of a dividing wall and a hut circle but dense bracken prevented close examination. No evidence for dating purposes. (2)

The enclosure is of simple form. It is not 'scooped', and the internal 'hut circle' is more a rectangular steading. These factors suggest that this is not a native work. On the other hand, the only later enclosures of this size found in the area are old sheep stalls. They are usually of dry stone wall construction, and few have been so completely denuded. Sketch survey at 1:2500. (3)

NT 96262303. This sub-oval enclosure measures overall about 32m east-west by about 38m transversely. The structure of the bank, the location, and the shape and size is all typical of a Romano-British homestead, but the generally denuded state of the work makes identification of internal detail difficult. Surveyed at 1:10,000 on MSD. (4)
