Roman period settlement, field system and medieval shieling on Brands Hill (Cheviotside)
(NT 98582385) Camp. (1)
At Old Town are the remains of a fortified dwelling with a single rampart and several foundations within. (2)
A large Votadinian homestead, and two or three hut circles and enclosures (at NT 98492391). (3)
Brands Hill No 10. Listed under Romano-British enclosed stone-built settlements. (4)
A fair example of local native settlement consisting of a homestead with extra-mural hut and enclosures. The homestead takes homestead the typical form of a substantial sub-oval rubble enclosure containing the probable sites of two free-standing huts, and traces of an internal dividing wall. Revised at 6 inch scale.
The small external complex to the north-west consists of one well preserved stone founded hut circle, and a small oval enclosure. Fragmentary banks extending from both hut and enclosure probably represent remains of further paddocks destroyed by later cultivation.
Surveyed at 6 inch scale. (5)
No conditional change to report of 10-10-69; the main enclosure measures overall about 44m north-west/south-east by 32m transversely. For 'Old Town', see NT 92 SE (M) Surveyed at 1:10,000 on MSD. (6)
SAM management agreement. (7)
Scheduled. (8)
NT 986238 Enclosures on Brands Hill W of Old Middleton; scheduled. (9a)
