A milepost has been noted on this stretch of the A696. It was fabricated in cast iron by Smith Patterson & Co Ltd of Blaydon (founded in 1870). Such monuments were set up to mark the distances between major centres, with the inscription for Newcastle upon Tyne (11 miles) and Ponteland (3 miles).
