Bronze Age Axes (Akeld)
A drawing (a) of two socketed bronze axes is entitled, Found at Humbleton Hill (near Wooler) the property of Matth. Culley esq, in 1816 - same size as the originals. Both are looped and have broad cutting edges distinctly hooked at each end in the Irish fashion, though it is not suggested that they are Irish imports. These must certainly be the two fine bronze socketed celts one 4ins long, the other 3ins, seen by members of the Society of Antiquaries Newcastle in the possession of Mr Culley on the occasion of a visit to Coupland Castle on 21 June 1888. (b) Present location of the two axes not known. (1)
