Romano-British Settlement on Coldberry Hill (Akeld)
(NT 97132736) U Homestead. (1)
A simple enclosure on the south-east slope of the hill, consisting of an earth and stone bank of average width 1m and maximum height 0.4m. A simple entrance to the east. The enclosure contains at least two hut circles, but the site is covered with dense bracken. Average diameter of the hut circles is 8m.
There is an annexe to the south of roughly circular proportions, constructed of an earth bank, of average width 0.7m and maximum height 0.2m. The nearest water supply is Hambleton Burn, 400m to the south. (2)
Listed under Romano-British enclosed stone-built settlements. (3)
Two conjoined enclosures, the larger formed by earth and rubble with occasional orthostats, the other bounded by a slight earthen bank, and possibly secondary (cf NT 92 NE 66). Internal hut sites are visible and the whole is consistent with this type of Jobey homestead. Surveyed at 1:2500. (4)
The larger enclosure measures approximately 29m north-west/south-east by 20m south-west/north-east and contains a hut circle, about 8m in diameter between the centres of an earth and stone bank spread to a width of approximately 1.8m by 0.4m high. No entrance is evident. There is a raised platform of earth and stone in the north-west corner.
The smaller enclosure measures 21m north-west/south-east by 12m south-west/north-east and contains no visible evidence of occupation and was possibly a stock enclosure. No entrance is visible. At the points the two enclosures join, earthen field banks eminate and from
their form and construction would appear to be contemporary with the smaller enclosure. Surveyed at 1:10,000. (5)
