Roman period settlement on Harthope Hill (Akeld)

(NT 96012856) Ancient enclosures. (1)

NT 96032856 An oval enclosure in a non defensive situation on the near level shoulder on the south-east slopes of Harehope Hill.
The enclosure is formed by a bank of earth and stones, maximum height 0.6m. There is an entrance marked by large stones on the south-east side. The enclosed area contains a hut circle 10m diameter, internal dividing wall of earth and stones and traces of what may have
been a rectangular building to the north. The interior of the enclosure is not 'scooped' but the hut is on a raised platform. The nearest water supply is the small stream to the south-east
(approximately 100m distant). (2)

Listed under Romano-British enclosed stone-built settlements. (3)

A well preserved homestead. Some later occupation may be represented by the internal compound wall, and traces of a rectangular building. Surveyed at 1:2500. (4)

NT 96022856 The overall dimensions of the enclosure are about 50m north-south by about 28m transversely. The identification of the amorphous stone banked feature in the north half as a 'rectangular building' is a matter of conjecture, but otherwise the work is typical of accepted enclosed Romano-British homesteads in the area, and as described by authority 2. (5)

NT 960286 Monday Cleugh, fragmentary trackway near the settlement. (6)

Scheduled. (7)

NT 960285 Settlement on E slope of Harehope Hill; scheduled. (8a)
