Medieval Shielings on Akeld Hill (Akeld)

(NT 94582938) An irregular stock enclosure. (1)

NT 94562940 An irregular enclosure situated on a north-west slope, contained by the remains of a stone wall maximum height 0.6m. There is a small gap, possibly an entrance on the north side.
There is a dividing wall or hut circle on the east side while outside the containing wall to the south a mass of loose stones may be the remains of another hut. The bracken which covers the site may conceal other traces of habitation.
On the north-west side of the enclosure are fragments of wall, possible an annexe.
There is a nearby source of water in the small stream 100m to the west. No dating evidence, but purpose probably for stock. (2)

The roughly coursed dry-stone walled construction of this enclosure is clearly of no great age, and it appears to be no more than an old sheepfold and lambing pen, similar to numerous others scattered over this moorland area. (3)

No change to previous field report of 26/6/69. (4)

Settlement south-west of Akeld Hill, scheduled monument Northum 503. A small well preserved settlement consisting of circular and rectangular huts and larger circular enclosures. Walls 2ft to 4ft high. [see also NT 92 NW 13]. (5)

Scheduled. (6)
