Field Clearance Cairns (Ingram)

Centred NT 984170. A cairn cemetery is situated on the top of a ridge of moorland pasture, at approx 850 feet above sea-level. There are at 17 cairns with diameters ranging from 4m to 7m. They have a maximum height of 0.4m and are of loose unhewn stones covered with turf. There
are no traces of ditches or retaining circles of stone.
'A'. NT 98541713. A large cairn of turf-covered loose stones, with a diameter of 9m and a maximum height of 0.3m. There are remains of a retaining circle of large boulders (7 stones) around the north-east side. There are no traces of a ditch. The cairn stands above a dry valley on the north side.
Encountered during Field Investigation. (1)

The 'cairn cemetery' is undoubtedly the result of stone clearance. It forms part of a widespread pattern of medieval and later cultivation consisting of rig and furrow and fields associated with a large nearby complex of rectangular steadings and enclosures (NT 91 NE 16).
The isolated cairn is larger and may be sepulchral. Surveyed at 6 inch scale. (2)

Condition unchanged. Isolated cairn at NT 98481713 surveyed at 1:10,000. (3)
