Biddlestone Hall just before demolition in the 1950s

This building once belonged to the Selby family who lived at Biddlestone for over 700 years. The hall was built in about 1796 by Thomas Selby and was altered by John Dobson in 1820. It remained in the Selby family until the early 20th century and was used as a convalescence home in World War II, after which it lay empty and was demolished in about 1957. It is said to have been the model for Osbaldistone Hall in Walter Scott's novel 'Rob Roy'.
