Haggle Rigg settlement (Simonburn)

This is a roughly triangular enclosure, surrounded by a low bank with an entrance in the south-east side. The remains of a possible round house can be seen inside it and there are traces of a field system to the south-east. This is probably an Iron Age or Roman date. (1)(2)

An Iron Age or Roman settlement enclosure containing a hut circle is visible as earthworks on air photographs, centred at NY 8347 7411. The embanked enclosure may have an entrance on its south-east side, where it faces Castle Burn. (3)(4)
