Round cairn 340m west of The Beacon (Harbottle)

Single cairn, 20m diameter x 0.2m high. On west summit of Dues Hill below The Beacon. (1)

Outside the western boundary of the wooded area of Dues Hill is a broad cairn about 25m in diameter, standing up to 2m high. It has been disturbed in the centre and upper parts but is substantially intact and is the largest cairn seen on the military ranges. (2)

Scheduled. (3)

Site visited 2005-06 when noted in a state of rapid decline and highly vulnerable to further damage. Cairn materials have already been disturbed and re-arranged by visiting troops using it as an infantry position. (4)

It is broadly ovate in form and measures some 24.6m along its longest axis and stands up to 2.3m high. The cairn is made up of stones between 0.06m and 0.8m in size. The cairn has been damaged by excavation of shelter hollows or gun pits which has exposed one possible cist; it is possible that other burials remain intact. (5)

NT 95160030. Remains of a round cairn, measuring a maximum of 25 metres in diameter and standing up to 2 metres high. Scheduled. (6a)
