Dere Street Roman road (Alwinton; Birtley; Corsenside; Rochester and Byrness; Broomhaugh and Riding; Wall; Whittington; Otterburn; Chollerton; Corbridge; Shotley Low Quarter; Broomley and Stocksfield)
Dere Street was the main Roman road in the North East of England and ran between York and the Firth of Forth in Scotland. It links the forts of Piercebridge, {Binchester D1420}, {Lanchester D1850}, {Ebchester D1911}, Corbridge, Chew Green and beyond into Scotland. It was built in the first century AD by the first governor of Britain, Julius Agricola. The name Dere Street is Anglo-Saxon and means the road to Deira or Yorkshire.
