Flint tools from Lyne Hill (Cresswell)
A concentration of microliths and other Mesolithic flints were found at Lyne Hill (NZ 303 907). The flints lay directly on top of a layer of boulder clay, and in the lower layer of sand immediately above it, Two sites, 15yds diameter and 100yds apart, produced as many as 3,000 flints in two days. Both sites were surrounded by a scatter of flints. The flints were brown, grey and red, contrasting with the local flint of chocolate brown to black. (1)
Lyne Hill is an area of turf-covered sand dunes and industrial waste. One or two eroded patches were noted during perambulation, but no surface flints were recovered. (2)
Lyne Hill is now the site of a local authority rubbish dump. (3)
Mesolithic flints found at Lyne Hill: 320 microliths, 400 scrapers and 40 burins. The site is now under colliery waste. The finds are in the Craven Museum, Skipton. (4)
