Bronze Age burial (Newbiggin-by-the-Sea)
[Marginal] Found at a depth of three feet above a grindstone quarry, called Spital Quarry, on the sea bank a little north of the village of Newbiggin, a stone cist and cover, containing urn. [No mention of burial or of funeral furniture]. (1)
[NZ 31018687] Spital Quarry is the old grindstone quarry at Spital Point [site indicated to investigator]. It is said that it has not been worked for over 80 years. The old quarries to the south are known as the Links Quarries. (2)
Spital Quarry is situated in the side of a small hill overlooking the small stream known as Spital Burn, a site typical of Bronze Age cist burials.
The quarry is small and overgrown and there were no surface finds. The present location of the urn mentioned in T1 was not discovered during field investigation.
The site of this cist is south of Newbiggin and not north as stated in T1. The authority T1(1) was rescrutinised and it was found that the topographical description was ambiguous and that the village referred to is probably North Seaton which lies to the south west of the site. The article in T1(1) was concerned with North Seaton and the area around it. (3)
