Medieval Hospital (Newbiggin-by-the-Sea)
(Name centred NZ 3093 8694) Hospital (NR) (Site of) (NAT). (1)
Lesser Hospital (net income under £50) existed until AD 1500 at Newbiggin. (2)
Hospital at Newbiggin founded pre AD 1391 and possibly dissolved in 16th century. Type and dedication unknown. (3-5)
The foundations of an old building and three stone coffins were discovered in 1929 when the tennis courts were being laid. I do not know what became of the coffins. [Site indicated by Mr Tiplady agrees with OS siting of Hospital]. (6a)
[NZ 3093 8695] The site of the Hospital is now occupied by tennis courts and ornamental gardens and no trace of the building remains. Some of the retaining walls of the tennis courts are constructed of well weathered dressed stones, but without any dateable features. These stones are possibly from the old foundations of the hospital. The present location of the stone coffins mentioned in Authority 4 was not ascertained. (6)
