New Hartley Colliery (Seaton Valley)
NZ 3117672. New Hartley Colliery. The site has largely been demolished although the footings of the engine house and shaft survive. One star rated. (1)
Hartley Colliery was the scene of a disaster on 16th January 1862 which caused the loss of 204 lives. The disaster led to examination of safety within mines and an Act of Parliament was passed stating all mines should have at least two shafts for ventilation. (2)
Colliery sunk 1845-6 by Messrs. Carr & Co. (3)
Some remains of this colliery are visible as and earthwork and structure on air photos take in 1947, namely part of a reservoir and a powder magazine. More recent imagery indicates that these features have now been levelled and demolished. (4)
