Lookout Farm prehistoric farmstead (Seaton Valley)

Cropmark of a single-ditched oval enclosure. (1)

Possible causewayed camp. A single ditch, with a number of gaps in it, encloses an area about 100m by 60m. Within the enclosure on some photographs there appears to be a circular ditched structure, about 20m in diameter. This structure may be the ditch around a timber round house and this would make the interpretation of a causewayed camp less likely. (2)

Possible causewayed camp at Lookout Farm. (3)

Examination of aerial photographs in 2008 has led to a revision in the interpretation of this cropmark. It is now considered to be a Late Prehistoric farmstead enclosure. Only three sides of the enclosure have been recorded giving a measurement of 70m by >90m with an entrance on the east side. (4)

The cropmarks earlier recorded are thought, in 2011, to represent the oval outline of an enclosed prehistoric settlement on the crest of a localized ridge. This is thought to be in a fair condition. (5)

An Iron Age/Roman curvilinear enclosure and associated field boundary are visible as cropmarks on air photographs, at NZ 3241 7752. The ditched enclosure measures approximately 69m across but is incomplete along its length. (6a)
