Bronze Age cists found in Mill Field (West Bedlington)

In the years 1934-35 Bedlington UDC began to lay out the Mill Field for the building of Council houses, and during that period five cists were found in an area of about 50 feet diameter.
No 1. Containing inhumation with 'an earthenware pot' subsequently broken.
No 2. Internal measurements 29 inches long x 16 inches wide at the head and 13 inches at the foot x 13 inches deep, cover stone 31inches x 22 inches overall, containing inhumation with beaker.
No 3. 'A large chamber' with what looked like an entrance at the side, containing a handful of human bone fragments and a flint knife.
No 4. Small and roughly made near the opening to No 3, containing small incinerated remains and a rather roughly made 'earthenware pot'.
No 5. Containing inhumation but no grave goods. (2)

Five cists found in Mill Field, one with a beaker containing a cremation. Bipartite vase, 131mm high, 160mm rim diameter, 80mm base diameter. In Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle (1963.15.4). (5)
A photograph dated about 1920 is annotated 'prehistoric remains Bedlington' and shows an enclosure with a barrow. There is no indication of the exact location but it lies adjacent to a road and may be the Mill Field site. (6)
