Two large rectangular enclosures discovered on aerial photographs are thought to be the remains of a rabbit warren. Inside the enclosures are a series of linear mounds which may be pillow mounds, or purpose-built breeding places for rabbits. The name Coneygarth strongly suggests there was a rabbit warren nearby and a 13th century charter of Henry III records the granting of free warren to Robert Bertram. Warrens were important and valuable sources of food and furs in medieval and post-medieval times.
