Hartford Bridge (Cramlington)

Hartford Bridge.
Hartford Bridge.
(NZ 24277998) At the beginning of the 13th century the ford (at Hartford) had been superseded by Hartford Bridge. Although no trace of the original bridge remains the present structure embodies a bridge of the 15th or 16th century to which period may be ascribed the eastern section of arches, water-pins and abutments up to the level of the modern road. The bridge was widened about 1688 and in 1904 received a further extension. (1)

The original portion is only about 8ft in width. (2)

The extent of the 15th/16th century bridge and its widening in 1688 are clearly visible on the underside of the arches. There is no trace of the 13th century bridge mentioned but it appears certain from the topography that it occupied the same site as the present bridge. See photographs. (3)

(Subsequently published) Hartford Bridge. (4)

Condition unchanged. (5)

Hartford Bridge, over the River Blyth. Grade II listed building. 15th or 16th century, widened 1688. (6)(7)
