Brinkburn Ironworks (Brinkburn Furnace) (Brinkburn and Hesleyhurst)
Ironworks established in mid-19th century to use local materials, were short-lived. (1)
The furnace of 1863 was rebuilt in 1871. The circular stone foundation is in good condition and corresponds with a construction drawing of the 1871 furnace. The circular furnace base is of particular importance and corresponds with the section published by Tylecote in 1983. (2)
An iron blast furnace first constructed in 1863 and then rebuilt on the same plan during 1871. The office is extant and has been converted into a domestic dwelling called Priors Edge. Other features on the site include a slag heap and a calcining kiln. Ore pits are located to the north east with an earthwork tramway linking the sites that has since been levelled. Quarrying of Ashlar to the west of the site is causing archaeological damage. (3a)
