High Thistleyhaugh cairn (Brinkburn and Hesleyhurst)
[NZ 1288 9820] Tumulus. (1)
About 75 yards west of the line of the Roman Road, are the remains of a large tumulus; the spot is called High Thistleyhaugh, and formerly some buildings occupied the site. The tenant, the late Mr Robert Leighton had taken stones from the cairn or tumulus for draining purposes, and had found an urn of red pottery, containing burnt bones, which was within a stone cist, formed of six slabs, making a cube of about 22 inches. (2)
The site of this tumulus is represented by an area of disturbed ground. It is impossible to distinguish the slopes of the mound or to give any dimensions. The situation is on the summit of the higher end of a spur.
On the level ground a little to the south east the ground is disturbed and the steadings of two enclosures or buildings can be made out. At 'A' (NZ 1293 9819) is a small circular steading 5m in diameter and at 'B' (NZ 1293 9817) a rectangular enclosure measuring about 14m x 12m. Other vaguer disturbances are also probably signs of occupation. There is no evidence for dating. The site commands a good all round view.
The present location of the finds mentioned by authority (2) were not ascertained. (3)
Published survey 1/2500 revised of the tumulus. The building steadings to the south-east have been destroyed by the laying of North Sea Gas pipes in 1970. (4)
