Roman period native settlement on Loansdean Hill, Mitford (Mitford)
'NZ 193842' Loansdean Hill. Situated 1/4 mile south west of Loansdean Hill Farm at an altitude of 300ft, a cropmark, almost square, single ditched enclosure with sides of c.150ft, and an entrance on the east. Part of what is possibly a large circular house shows on the photograph. (Listed under rectangular enclosures some of which are likely to fall into the pattern of rectilinear Romano-British settlements). (1)(2)
Nothing is visible on the ground, and little can be added to Jobey's summary of the cropmark (resited to NZ 191 840). It has the appearance of a small rectilinear type of native enclosure, but other markings on the west side give rise to some doubt. (3)
NZ 191840. Rectilinear enclosure. Cropmark photographed in 1977. (4)
The cropmarks of a prehistoric or Roman period settlement are visible south of Morpeth Golf Course, on the eastern side of the A1 dual carriageway, by Google Earth aerial photography. The enclosure appars to be double ditched and polygonal in shape, with the features on the western side possibly better preserved. There may be an eastern entrance to the inner enclosure. The site is shown in Google Earth aerial photography accessed in November 2013, but of individual photographs taken 31 December 2002. (5)
This rectilinear enclosure is visible as cropmarks and soilmarks on various air photos. It is likely to be of Iron Age or Roman date. It is defined by a ditched circuit measuring 47x46m but on photos taken when the soils were bare, pale toned soilmarks inside and outside of the ditch suggest the remains of banks. The gap in the eastern side is likely to be an entrance. A ditch runs north to south close to the enclosure but the date of this feature is not known. (6) (7) (8)
