Molesden West enclosure (Meldon)
NZ 135839 Molesden West 2. A rectangular single-ditched enclosure situated 400yds south west of Molesden West 1 (NZ 18 SW 9) at an altitude of 300ft. The ditch is visible on the ground as a shallow depression some 15ft wide, but will disappear with repeated ploughing. The site is not quite rectangular, the south side being c.170ft long and the others c.200ft. Corners are slightly rounded and there is an entrance on the east side 12ft wide. A hollowed area shows internally on the north side of the entrance. (Listed under rectangular enclosures some of which are likely to fall into the pattern of Romano-British rectilinear settlements). (1)(2)
Vague traces of the north and west sides of the enclosure are discernible on the ground as irregular and superficial depressions, but no intelligible portrayal can be made at 25 inch scale.
No more information can be gained from the aerial photograph than has already been inferred by Jobey, but certainly the general description, and the presence of a probable east-facing entrance flanked by internal depression are compatible with the local type of native domestic enclosure. (3)
NZ 135840. Rectilinear enclosure. Cropmark photographed in 1977. (4)
Enclosure visible on infra-red imagery. (5)
