Riplington (Whalton)
NZ 116820. Deserted medieval village at Riplington. (Nothing visible on available aerial photographs (RAF 1947)). (1)
Riplington consists of a single farmstead at NZ 11488205 There is no visible evidence of depopulation in the vicinity and any 'village' was probably of the non-nucleated type. (2)
The manor of Riplington was a member of the lordship of Whalton. It was held as moieties of a knight's fee in 1242. In 1367 one of the moieties was said to be in the hands of tenants at will. Riplington was not, however, represented in any of the medieval Lay Subsidies. This suggests that the settlement was a small one from at least the late 13th century. Extensive depopulation may have occurred earlier.
Three houses were listed in the 1666 Hearth Tax; in the early 19th century Riplington comprised two farmhouses and a few cottages. Only one farmstead and a house remain.
Ridge and furrow define the perimeter of the village on its east and south sides. The south-east corner of the area contains the sites of either buildings or small enclosures. (3)
