Abbey Mill (Mitford)

18th century mill, remodelled in early 19th century. Lower parts stone, remainder brick in English Garden Wall bond. Undershot waterwheel, partly rebuilt. The mill was originally a fulling mill, reopened in 1834 by the Ashton brothers as a cloth mill and worked until 1947. (1)

Mitford, Newminster Blanket Mill, NZ 184 860. On River Wansbeck, Existing undershot wheel 13 feet diameter by 3 feet wide. Photographed inside and outside. Operating pre-1828. Now [1964-65] converted to a house. Two dye vats. Wheels and pulleys remain. Undergoing conversion in 1964-65. Noted by Major. (2)
