Medieval borough of Mitford (Mitford)
Mitford. Plantation 1100-57. Suggested by Hodgson that Mitford was the first crossing of the Wansbeck by the main road from Newcastle to Scotland. Mitford must be older than Morpeth; possibly as old as the castle [NZ 18 NE 4] c.1100. Market charter in 1157. Burgages recorded in early 14th century. (1)
An undated document makes mention of a quitclaim (release and disclaimer of all rights, interest and potential legal actions from a grantor to a grantee) by the burgesses of Mitford (1a). In 1326,
there were twenty burgages in Mitford `as of the castle' (1b). (1a-b)
