Newminster Abbey was a Cistercian monastery founded in 1138. It was set up by monks from Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire. All that can be seen now are parts of the walls. There was a large church and a square chapter house and cloisters. Excavations in 1963 revealed the plan of the abbey church. This is a Scheduled Monument and a Grade II Listed Building protected by law.
